What Makes a Trained Leader?

Every Youth Deserves a Trained Adult Leader

Adult leaders in units are considered trained, and eligible to wear the official “Trained” emblem, once they have completed Youth Protection Training and the training courses outlined below, or have completed Youth Protection Training and a previous basic training course when it was current. If you complete training in-person, you may take training in any district or council and send a copy of the completion certificate to training@nevadabsa.org receive credit. Youth Protection Training is a joining requirement for all registered adults and must be retaken every two years!

While the courses listed below are the minimum required for Basic Leader Training, BSA offers many courses to help leaders provide the very best possible Scouting experience to youth. Go here to view ADULT training material.

Youth Protection Training

  • Youth Protection training is required for all BSA registered volunteers and is a joining requirement.
  • Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer’s Youth Protection certification is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be re-registered.
  • If a volunteer’s YPT certification lapses at any other time, BSA membership will be suspended. Suspended members are no longer allowed to participate, attend, or represent Scouting programs and activities as a leader and may only attend as a legal guardian for their own youth.
  • Watch the Understanding Youth Protection Video

To complete Youth Protection training, go to My.Scouting.org and create an account. You’ll receive an email notification with your account information, including a member ID/reference number. Save this information since it will be used frequently.

Click on the Youth Protection logo on the main page to complete the training. Upon completion, you may print a training certificate to submit with a volunteer application. Your training will automatically be updated in our system and associated with the member ID/reference number issued when you created the account.

When your volunteer application is approved, you will receive a BSA membership card that includes your member ID number.

E-Learning

What is E-Learning?

Many courses are available in the E-Learning section of my.scouting.org. A login is required, but anyone may create a user account and view the courses. Registered members of the BSA must provide their member numbers (as part of the user profile) to receive credit. These include:

  • Youth Protection Training
  • Position-Specific Training (Including Merit Badge Counselor, Chaplain, & New Member Coordinator)
  • Hazardous Weather Training (Required for Scoutmasters & Assistant Scoutmasters)
  • BALOO Prerequisite Training
  • Safe Swim Defense Training
  • Safety Afloat Training
  • Trek Safely Training
  • Climb on Safely Training
  • Drive Safely Training
  • and more…

One of the best parts of E-Learning is that it is tied to your membership account IF your member number is correctly linked. When courses are completed, training records are automatically updated.

PLEASE NOTE: If you have forgotten your Username and/or Password, please select “Forgot Username?” or “Forgot Password.” Do NOT create a duplicate account as this confuses the system.

If you have been registered in another council or need to update your member number, contact us at: 775-787-1111 or info@nevadabsa.org
